To Love

The film is built from four separate love stories, tied together with news footage from the end of the sixties. Each story opens with a line taken from the Song of Songs. Interviews shot in the street come in between; passers by are all asked the same question, what it means to love. Fiction and documentary running into each other in this way is the real form of the film. The account gives no single answer and leaves the multiplicity of the answers standing. The production ran into trouble in its own day, both because it draws on a religious text and because it shows a daily life outside the official account. The seventy three minute Soviet film by Mikhail Kalik and Inna Tumanyan was completed in 1968.
