What Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am Is About
Timothy Greenfield-Sanders's 2019 documentary is about the writer Toni Morrison. Morrison is at its centre and tells her own life: the years as an editor at a publishing house, the writing of her first novel and the reception of the books that followed. The argument concerns whom Morrison wrote for. Her refusal to place the white reader's gaze at the centre, and her defence of that as a choice rather than a lack, is emphasised; the reactions of critics to that stance are carried too. Oprah Winfrey, Angela Davis and Fran Lebowitz are among those who speak. Collage and painting are used in the visual design. The narrative touches only briefly on the difficult parts of the life; the weight is on the work. Who it's for: those who follow literary documentary and American racial history. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical biography; the documentary stands beside its subject.
