What Toto the Sheik Is About
Antonio is a humble servant in the wealthy household of the Marquis Gastone, hopelessly in love with Lulù. When she betrays him he does the only sensible thing available to a man in that condition and enlists in the Foreign Legion. What he finds in the desert is not a war but an opening for a change of identity, and the servant promptly becomes a sheik. Mario Mattoli's film comes from the most productive stretch of postwar Italian comedy. Totò is servant and sheik, coward and hero, and it is his face rather than the plot that carries the picture. Aroldo Tieri and Tamara Lees are alongside him.
