What Neapolitan Turk Is About
In Naples and Sorrento in the twenties, two small-time crooks work out a plan: one of them will pose as a Turkish eunuch and enter the service of a wealthy family's women. The plan falls apart immediately, and what remains is Toto ruining everything without pause. It comes from a nineteenth-century Neapolitan farce by Eduardo Scarpetta, so the Turk here is a costume rather than a character, one of the ready-made devices of the period's stage comedy, and that part has aged badly. The reason to watch is Toto himself, one of the few performers who is funny with his face and his joints.
