What Tras-os-Montes Is About
The film is set in a region in the north east of Portugal and treats it almost as a place out of legend. The account does not build a single story; it offers a fabric woven from many small narratives, and in that fabric past, present and future pass into one another. The line between documentary and fiction is deliberately left unclear; villagers play their own lives, yet the scenes are arranged. It is the first feature length film in the trilogy the directors made about this region. The account offers no explanation; it works with sound, with faces and with landscape, and it asks patience of the viewer. The hundred and eight minute Portuguese film by Margarida Cordeiro and Antonio Reis was completed in 1976.
