What Trashed Is About
Candida Brady's 2012 documentary follows the world's rubbish with Jeremy Irons. It moves from the heaps washing up on coastlines to incinerators, from landfill to the plastic ending up in the ocean, with the aim of showing where the things we throw away actually go. The film sets out what burning, burying and dumping at sea each leave behind. It does not close on hopelessness, though: it also shows local authorities that have come close to zero waste and examples that work. The telling leans at times on Irons's star presence. It is still insistent, and visual, about the fact that what we throw away does not disappear.
