Tuner

Tuner (2026) fits in one sentence: a piano tuner with a perfect ear discovers the same ear can open safes. Niki is a former child prodigy with a condition called hyperacusis. He hears everything at far greater intensity than other people, which is both his curse and his trade. He tunes pianos. Then he finds he can hear the tumblers inside a lock. The film does not present this as a superpower. Everything Niki hears arrives at that same intensity, traffic and crowds included, and the sound design puts the audience inside his ear. The best scenes are not the robberies but the ones where he is trying to sit in a café. It is Daniel Roher's first narrative feature. Roher made the documentary Navalny and won an Oscar for it, and coming from documentary he takes sound and place very seriously. Dustin Hoffman plays the mentor and has landed a genuinely good part for the first time in a while. It screened at Telluride and was released in 2026. It runs 108 minutes. Good for: heist films, character driven thrillers, and anyone who notices sound design. Less good for: it does not have classic heist pacing, since it is more interested in Niki than in the robberies. There is violence, but not much.
