What Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Is About
Randall Lobb's 2014 documentary covers how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came about. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird began in 1984 with a black-and-white comic they printed with their own money; the title was originally a joke about the popular genres of the moment. The most interesting part is that beginning. The two artists distributing their own book to shops, the first printing selling out and the deal with a toy company changing everything are all covered in detail. The hard tone the characters had in the comic was entirely softened for the television adaptation. Eastman, Laird, Steve Barron, who directed the 1990 film, and cast members all speak. The documentary's limit is a narrow critical distance; too much room is given to the story of commercial success. Who it's for: those interested in comics and popular culture history. Who it's not for: viewers new to the subject; the documentary assumes you know the series and its products.
