What The Crystal Calls - Making The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Is About
Randall Lobb's 2019 documentary describes the making of the series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Rebuilding the world of Thra from Jim Henson's 1982 film with puppets required more than four hundred puppets on set and the teams who operated them. The documentary shows that labour in detail: mould-making, fur stitching, mechanical eye systems. The most interesting section concerns the physical conditions of the puppeteers, people lying on their backs beneath the set for hours with their arms in the air. Brian Froud's design thinking and what Lisa Henson says about her father's legacy add a further layer. Its limit is saying nothing about the series' commercial failure and cancellation; the production was prepared before the show aired. Who it's for: viewers interested in puppetry, practical effects and the Jim Henson tradition. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the series, or wary of documentaries that function as promotion.
