What TV Junkie Is About
Rick Kirkham started filming himself at fourteen and never really stopped, accumulating more than three thousand hours of video diary. He worked as a crime reporter in Las Vegas and then as a correspondent for Inside Edition, covering crime and celebrity, and the tapes run straight through the years in which he was addicted to crack cocaine. Matt Radecki and Michael Cain went through that archive and assembled seven years of a collapse his family lived through with him. The film took a special jury prize at Sundance in 2006 and was broadcast the following year as part of HBO’s series on addiction. What makes it uncomfortable is that the camera is never only a witness here; it is part of what is happening.
