Two Women

Chloe Robichaud's 2025 Quebec film takes its title and starting point from a Canadian comedy of 1970. Violette is on the emotional edge during her maternity leave; Florence feels nothing at all. Neither understands what is happening to her, and they find each other at the place their suburban lives have brought them. The original was made as a comedy of sexual liberation; this version rebuilds the same frame in today's language. The subject is no longer doing what is forbidden but the complete disappearance of desire. That change is the most interesting thing about it. Robichaud keeps the humour hard without mocking her characters. The rapport between Karine Gonthier-Hyndman and Laurence Leboeuf carries the film. The narrative loosens in places and the second half does not hold the energy of the first. Who it's for: those who like Quebec cinema and comedies built on friendship between women. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the tone of the original; this reimagining stands somewhere else entirely.
