What Unbowed Is About

Kim, a mathematics professor, loses his post after publicly saying that a question in the university entrance exam was wrong. The suit he brings is dismissed and his appeal goes nowhere. Eventually he turns up at the door of the judge hearing his case carrying a crossbow. In the trial that follows there is only one question: was an arrow fired or not. The film is drawn from a real case in 2007. In its telling, the professor insists he never fired and only wanted a fair hearing; the courts found otherwise, and the real professor served four years. Chung Ji-young returned to filmmaking with it after thirteen years, it became an unexpected box office success in Korea, and it set off a long public argument about the judiciary.
