What National Security Is About

On 4 September 1985 Kim Geun-tae, one of the leading figures of the South Korean democracy movement, was seized and taken to the interrogation building in the Namyeong district of Seoul. For twenty two days he was systematically tortured to make him confess to collaborating with communists. Chung Ji-young keeps almost the entire film inside that room: no outside, no rescue, only duration. Park Won-sang plays Kim and Lee Kyung-young plays the interrogator. The source is Kim Geun-tae's own account. The director called it the hardest thing he had done in thirty years of work. What it shows about torture under the Chun Doo-hwan government is not an abstract evil but an institution that kept office hours.
