What Varsity Blues Is About
In a Texas town everything depends on the high school football team. The backup quarterback goes on when the starter is injured, and the town's expectation lands on him at once. What makes the film interesting is that it puts the coach on the other side: he plays injured boys on painkilling injections and cares about nothing but winning. The narrative shows this not as personal wickedness but as what the town wants. Brian Robbins directed. James Van Der Beek leads with Jon Voight as the coach, and Paul Walker is in the cast. Before watching: it was sold as a teen comedy but the injury and pressure thread is serious. The women are also drawn to the conventions of the period and read thinly now.
