Varumayin Niram Sivappu

K. Balachander's 1980 Tamil film follows three educated young men looking for work in Delhi. They have their degrees and the city makes no room for them. The film treats poverty as a matter of shame. Rangan returns from interviews empty-handed and hides it from those around him; the narrative shows scene by scene how humiliation accumulates. Kamal Haasan and Sridevi lead. Balachander joined social subjects to melodrama, and the emotional emphasis here is high. The close offers no solution. Who it's for: viewers of classic Tamil cinema and social drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a hopeful close; the film ends hard.
