What Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach Is About
Louise Osmond builds Ken Loach’s career out of its fights: the homelessness campaign that followed Cathy Come Home in 1966, the right-wing press backlash when The Wind That Shakes the Barley took the Palme d’Or in 2006, the argument with the censors over the language in Sweet Sixteen. The line runs from a job as an understudy in a Kenneth Williams revue through television plays like Up the Junction to a long career in features. Osmond was given access on the set of I, Daniel Blake, widely treated at the time as the last film Loach would make, which went on to win the Palme d’Or in 2016. The opposition in the title is the point: he has spent sixty years arguing with somebody.
