What Victory March Is About
Paolo Passeri, fresh out of university, delicate and brought up soft, finds himself in an officer training programme under Captain Asciutto, a hard man who takes soldiering to be the art of making men. The captain tries to break him in by tormenting him and at the same time keeps him close; Paolo becomes first his confidant, then his informer, and in the end the lover of his wife. Marco Bellocchio shows the army not as a story about a country but as a machine for teaching obedience. The bond between the captain and the young man is the most uncomfortable thing in the film. Michele Placido, Franco Nero and Miou-Miou appear in the hundred and eighteen minute Italian production, completed in 1976.
