What Village Rockstars Is About
The only thing ten year old Dhunu, who lives in a small village in Assam, wants is a rock band of her own. She has no real guitar and makes do with a piece of foam board; in a place where girls are expected to be quiet and well behaved she climbs trees, goes about with the boys and answers to no one. Her widowed mother stands behind her instead of stopping her and lets the girl follow what she wants. Rima Das shot her eighty seven minute Assamese film alone: she wrote it, held the camera herself, edited it and produced it, having had no training in film. Bhanita Das plays Dhunu. It won the National Film Award for best feature film and is the film India submitted for the foreign language film Oscar.
