What Vlad the Impaler: The True Life of Dracula Is About
The film is about Vlad Tepes, the Wallachian prince known as the Impaler and remembered in Western fiction as Dracula. It shows him on two fronts: against the Ottoman army in the field and against the boyars in his own court. Doru Nastase's 1979 production presents him as a hard but just ruler, which is the reading established in Romanian national memory. The same man is remembered very differently in Turkish historiography, and it is worth knowing before watching that the film gives that second view no room. Stefan Sileanu leads.
