What Wackersdorf Is About
At the start of the eighties the Bavarian government plans a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant for a region with high unemployment. What is promised is three thousand jobs. Hans Schuierer, the district administrator, supports the project at first. Then he starts asking questions: where are the health reports, why are objections being suppressed, how are the decisions being taken. Oliver Haffner's film is based on real events. Schuierer refused to sign the permits, the state parliament passed a special law to get around his block, and the plant was abandoned in 1989 after years of protest. The film tells this not as a heroic story but as a civil servant slowly changing his mind. Johannes Zeiler plays Schuierer.
