Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie

Ben Halper and Nellie have just married. The train sets them down in a small town in Illinois. Ben is going to open a barber shop there. Nellie is disappointed the moment she sees the town. She does not want to stay and dreams of the city. Ben tells her the shop and the house are rented. That is not true, he has bought them both. The lie goes on for years. He never takes what his wife wants into account. That is how the distance between them grows. His stubbornness leads, by an indirect road, to her death. Ben spends the rest of his life with it. The fiftieth anniversary of the town’s founding comes around. The man is by now the town’s first barber. On that day he looks back. What he recounts is not only his wife but his own flaw. Jean Peters and David Wayne appear in the hundred and eight minute film, an American production Henry King finished in 1952.
