What Warning: This Drug May Kill You Is About
The documentary tells of the opioid epidemic in the United States through four families. In all four the story starts in the same place: an operation, an accident or a tooth pulled, and then a prescription for painkillers. What follows is dependence, hidden boxes, jobs lost and, in some of these families, death. The film gives this not as a statistic seen from a distance but as something that happens to particular people, and it also asks how the habit of prescribing enlarged the picture. The telling softens nothing, and it does not turn the pain into a spectacle either. Perri Peltz’s sixty minute American documentary was made for HBO; it was completed in 2017.
