What We Were There: First Love Is About
Takahiro Miki's film covers the first half of a relationship that spans ten years. In high school Motoharu Yano is the most popular boy in the school, but he cannot come out of his grief for a girlfriend killed in a car accident. Nanami Takahashi falls in love with him and has to carry the whole weight of the relationship, because part of the boy in front of her is permanently somewhere else. The film does not build first love as a sweet memory; it shows that loving someone can mean taking on their mourning as well. Adapted from a manga and shot in two parts, this is the first. The story does not end here, so the ending is left unspoiled. Toma Ikuta and Yuriko Yoshitaka lead.
