What We Were There: True Love Is About
In the winter of their second year of high school, Yano moves from Kushiro to Tokyo because of a family matter, and he and Nanami promise to meet again. Years pass; Nanami is a final-year student hunting for work, Yano’s friend Takeuchi is the one beside her, and the long-distance relationship they have kept up is left hanging when Yano stops making contact. This second half of a two-film adaptation carries a high-school romance into the first years of adulthood: job interviews, rent, an unexplained absence and a friend who stays close without trying to fill the gap. Takahiro Miki directed, working from Yuki Obata’s manga, serialised between 2002 and 2012 and collected in sixteen volumes. The first film opened in March 2012 and this one in April, with Toma Ikuta and Yuriko Yoshitaka in the leads.
