What Whale Nation Is About
A humpback whale is stranded on a remote shore, and the effort to save it gives the film its frame. From there it moves out into the world of whales in the oceans, a history running back more than fifty million years, their complicated social lives and the ways they speak to each other. Jean-Albert Lièvre spent twenty-five years travelling and swimming with whales before making it, and built the film around Heathcote Williams’s long poem Whale Nation. Jean Dujardin narrates the French version. On the soundtrack the whales’ own songs take up as much room as the images, treated as the subject rather than as background.
