What When I Am Dead and White Is About
Janko Bugarski, known to everyone as Jimmy Barka, is a young drifter picking up seasonal work, getting thrown off it, and floating through the poor Serbian provinces with a dream of becoming a singer. Amateur singing contests, borrowed money, promises that were never going to be kept; the film neither elevates the dream nor mocks it, it simply knows from the start where it is going to end. Živojin Pavlović directed, with a screenplay by Ljubiša Kozomara and Gordan Mihić. This was the role that brought Dragan Nikolić out, with Ružica Sokić and Neda Spasojević beside him. It is usually called the blackest film of the Yugoslav Black Wave, and it earns the name. It took the Great Golden Arena at Pula in 1968 and first prize at Karlovy Vary the same year.
