When I Grow Up, I'll Be a Kangaroo

In Belgrade three separate stories run through a single night. A student named Braca tries to impress Iris, a model he has met; both present their worlds as something other than they are. Šomi and Duje shut themselves in a bar to watch a match between Manchester and Eastwich; they bet on Eastwich because their childhood friend Kengur is in goal. In the third story two young men hang around on a rooftop, and the night brings all of them to the same point. Radivoje Andrić's film was among the most widely seen Serbian youth comedies of the early 2000s. The narrative runs on three tracks, is dialogue-heavy and thick with slang, and most of the humour comes from characters trying to appear larger than they are. Sergej Trifunović, Nebojša Glogovac and Marija Karan are in the cast. The film holds cult status in Serbia. Who it's for: Viewers who like Balkan youth comedy, multi-strand narratives, and films set over one night. Who it's not for: Most of the jokes depend on local language and period, and much is lost in subtitles. The women characters also stay thin.
