When I Will Become a Giant

Petya Kopeikin is in the eighth grade. He is short. Nothing about his looks stands out. He is at the centre of the class all the same. He reads a great deal and is quick with an answer. He writes poems. He is in love with his classmate Masha and has told no one. Masha likes Kolya, a boy newly arrived at the school. One day she opens up to Petya and asks him to pass Kolya a note. He does not stand in their way. He sets about bringing the two of them together instead. What he has in mind is Cyrano de Bergerac, carrying the part from Rostand’s play into his own life. The film was shot in Sevastopol and gave Mikhail Efremov his first leading role, with his father Oleg Efremov also in the cast. Liya Akhedzhakova appears in the eighty four minute film, a Soviet production Inna Tumanyan finished in 1979.
