Where We Belong

Kongdej Jaturanrasmee's 2019 Thai film follows Sue, preparing to leave to study abroad. She draws up a list of things to do before she goes, and the hardest item on it is parting from her closest friend. The subject is the difference between the one who leaves and the one who stays. Belle will remain in the town and has accepted it; Sue cannot explain even to herself why she wants to go. The narrative does not resolve that imbalance. The leads come from a music group well known in Thailand, which is part of the film's draw. The camera is mostly handheld, the scenes long and the dialogue close to improvised. Who it's for: those who like Thai independent cinema and youth drama about friendship. Who it's not for: viewers waiting for an event; the film is almost entirely talking and wandering.
