What Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him?) Is About
John Scheinfeld's 2010 documentary tells the life of the singer and songwriter Harry Nilsson. Never touring and refusing to play live, yet cited as the favourite American artist of the Beatles, Nilsson won two Grammys and dismantled his own career systematically. Its most concrete sections cover the lost weekend period with John Lennon and the recording sessions that permanently damaged his voice. The film is honest in refusing to turn his drinking and drug use into a romantic legend of the artist. Its limit is the absence of musical analysis; the question of why the songs are so strange goes largely unopened. Randy Newman, Jimmy Webb and Micky Dolenz speak. Who it's for: viewers interested in popular music history and musician biography. Who it's not for: anyone unfamiliar with Nilsson's music who will not connect, or avoiding content about addiction.
