What Why Are the Bells Ringing, Mitica? Is About
The film is adapted from a theatrical text by the Romanian writer Ion Luca Caragiale. Caragiale was a bitter and funny witness of middle class manners in Romania at the turn of the twentieth century. The account moves inside an order built out of carnival scenes. The pace is fast and the tone burlesque, with a meditative vein underneath. Pintilie keeps the strained air of the plays and heightens it further. The film was banned in Romania for a decade. It could only be released after the death of Ceausescu and the revolution of 1989. Why a comic text was counted dangerous remains a subject of its own. Victor Rebengiuc and Gheorghe Dinică appear in Lucian Pintilie’s hundred and thirty two minute Romanian film, completed in 1981.
