What The Afternoon of a Torturer Is About
A young journalist interviews a man who worked as a torturer in the first years of the communist regime in Romania. The conversation takes place in a garden, inside an ordinary afternoon; the man does not deny what he did, nor does he set about defending himself as he tells it. That is exactly what makes the film uncomfortable: the gulf between the weight of what is being told and the calm of the telling. The account sets up neither a trial nor a scene of forgiveness; it shows that living alongside the crime itself is possible. The man facing the journalist and the viewer forced to listen to him are caught in the same tightness. Gheorghe Dinica plays the lead in Lucian Pintilie’s seventy six minute Romanian film, completed in 2002.
