What Wife! Be Like a Rose! Is About
Kimiko is a young woman working in an office in Tokyo who lives with her serious, educated, haiku writing mother. She wants to marry the man she loves, but by the custom of the period it is her father who must conduct the negotiations, and her father has not been at home for years. Kimiko sets out to find him and finds him with another woman, having built a second family. The film blames nobody here; it tries to understand both women and the man caught between them. The account comes from the vein of Japanese cinema of the thirties that looked closely at the lives of women. Sachiko Chiba appears in Mikio Naruse’s seventy four minute Japanese film, completed in 1935.
