Wife

A marriage has reached its tenth year. The wife is not content with what her husband earns. Because of it she has to work as well. Nothing is left over for herself. The husband for his part finds her untidy and sour. He thinks she does not keep the house well. In return he sometimes ignores her. At other times he treats her as a servant. Neither of them is happy. The lodgers in the house do not improve matters. The husband then feels drawn to a former colleague. The woman is a widow with a small child. He begins to think of leaving his wife. Mieko Takamine and Ken Uehara take the leads in Mikio Naruse’s Japanese film of 1953.
