What Wild Oranges Is About
John Woolfolk, who has lost his wife, has put out to sea in his yacht to get away from his grief and comes by chance upon a deserted island. Millie Stope lives there with her grandfather, passing her days under the pressure of a man named Nicholas who is a fugitive from justice. A closeness forms quickly between Woolfolk and Millie, and it upsets the fragile balance on the island. King Vidor’s eighty eight minute silent film builds its tension out of swamp, isolation and fear and sets the romance inside that. Frank Mayo and Virginia Valli take the leads, with Ford Sterling and Nigel De Brulier in the cast. It was completed in 1924.
