ZEF - The Story of Die Antwoord

Jon Day's 2024 documentary covers the founding and spread of a South African rap group. They built their aesthetic through a local subculture, became known quickly online and reached an international audience. The documentary was shot over five years and made from within the group's own circle. The narrator is the members' child and the visual design belongs to a photographer who has worked with them for years. That keeps it from being an independent view. The serious allegations raised about the group and the argument they produced are the film's most contested aspect; the documentary gives them limited room and stays largely with the group's own account. Who it's for: those interested in South African music and subculture documentaries. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical assessment; the film keeps no distance from its subject.
