Amaliya Mordvinova What 27 Missing Kisses Is About
Nana Jorjadze's film opens with Sybilla, fourteen, sent to spend the summer with her aunt in a provincial town. In the town are Alexander, a widower of forty one, and Mickey, his adolescent son. Mickey falls for Sybilla, and Sybilla for Alexander. The film builds this as a summer of growing up and as a fable-like comedy, adding fantastical touches, a whole town coming of age at once, and a great deal of humour. From here the frame is uncomfortable, because there is a child of fourteen and a man in his forties, and the film does not construct that as a problem. It showed in the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and was Georgia's Academy Award submission.
