What A Sailor-Made Man Is About
Harold Lloyd’s first feature happened by accident. It was planned as a two-reel short, the gags kept coming, and by the time anyone stopped adding it ran forty-seven minutes; from 1921 onward Lloyd made features only. The setup is thin on purpose: an idle rich young man is told by the father of the girl he wants to marry to go and get a job, so he enlists in the Navy more or less at random. When she is carried off by an Eastern potentate, the useless sailor finally has to be of use. The second half leans on the orientalist stock imagery of its moment and does not look better for it. Fred C. Newmeyer directed, and Mildred Davis plays opposite Lloyd once again.
