Michel Deville sends two childhood friends in their thirties, Hélène and Lucie, on a trip through the south of France. Looking at summer houses is the pretext; what they actually do is talk, about their marriages, their boredom, what they remember and what they invent. Deville built the script not as a single story but out of fifteen separate accounts contributed by fifteen writers, so the film moves in episodes, some light and teasing, others of the kind these two do not say out loud easily. Dominique Sanda and Geraldine Chaplin play the pair, and the traffic between the dominant and the yielding side of the friendship is the film’s real subject. It was shown at the thirtieth Berlin Film Festival in 1980.
