What Angels of the Universe Is About
Pall paints when he is young, falls in love, and then at some point something gives way and he is admitted to a psychiatric hospital with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Everyone he meets inside has a world of their own: one signs cheques for Hitler, another is certain he is writing songs and transmitting them to the Beatles. The film never mocks them; it takes those worlds as they are. Fridrik Thor Fridriksson adapted Einar Mar Gudmundsson's novel, which the author wrote out of the life of his own brother, who had schizophrenia. Ingvar E. Sigurdsson won the audience-voted best actor prize at the European Film Awards for it. The illness is neither exalted nor made monstrous here; the film simply shows a life narrowing.
