Bryndis Petra Bragadóttir What Children of Nature Is About
In Friðrik Þór Friðriksson’s 1991 film, an elderly farmer leaves his place in the north to move in with his daughter’s family in Reykjavík, discovers there is no room for him there, and is put into a home. Inside it he meets Stella, whom he knew when they were young, and the two of them slip out and set off on a last journey back to where they were born, in the Western Fjords. The film treats this not as an escape but as a return, and the landscape occupies as much of it as the people do. Bruno Ganz appears briefly. It remains the only Icelandic film ever nominated for the foreign-language Oscar.
