What Are We Men or Corporals? Is About
Totò is a man who has spent his life being pushed around, and as he sees it the world divides in two: there are men, and there are corporals. Men work, take it, and keep quiet; corporals use whatever scrap of authority they hold to grind somebody else down. The film lays out that division episode by episode through Totò's own life story. Colonel Hammler, who runs the camp he ends up in, is the hardest specimen of the type. Camillo Mastrocinque directs. The idea came from Totò himself and it is regarded as the most personal film of his career; under the comedy there is an unconcealed class anger. The question in the title became a saying in Italian.
