What Totòtruffa '62 Is About
One of Totò's best-known comedies. Antonio is a former variety performer running small swindles with a friend to keep his daughter in a good boarding school. His attempt to sell Rome's monuments to tourists is the film's most famous scene and is still quoted in Italy. The commissioner on his trail chases him with a kind of paternal stubbornness. Then the two men's children, who know nothing about any of it, fall in love, and the reckoning goes somewhere else. The jokes rest on wordplay and on Totò's face; some of it will not survive translation.
