Backfire

Discharged from a military hospital, Bob Corey sets out to look for his army friend Steve Connolly. Connolly used to be mixed up with crime but had straightened out; now he is on the run over a murder that has been pinned on him. Corey wants to clear him. With him is Julie, a nurse he met at the hospital, and the further they follow the trail the more tangled the story turns out to be. Vincent Sherman's Warner picture belongs among the noirs about men coming back from the war and not finding an order to fit into. The story is built in flashbacks; each witness tells the same event a different way. Virginia Mayo, Viveca Lindfors and Edmond O'Brien are in the cast. Night in Los Angeles and hospital corridors set the tone; the end of the war has brought nobody any ease.
