What Bambi Is About
Marie-Pierre Pruvot was born in 1935 in a small village in Algeria, and even as a child refused the life her family expected of her. Seeing the Carrousel de Paris troupe perform in Algiers in the fifties was enough: she left for Paris, took the stage name Bambi, and spent years working the music-hall stages. When the cabaret years ended she became a schoolteacher. Sébastien Lifshitz listens to her in the present and lets the film be about how a trans woman built her own life rather than about anyone else’s idea of it. It won the Teddy Award for best documentary at the Berlin festival in 2013.
