Bilo the Banker

Banker Bilo, directed by Ertem Eğilmez from a screenplay by Sadık Şendil and Yavuz Turgul, is a Yeşilçam comedy starring İlyas Salman and Şener Şen. The film follows Bilo, an olive worker who is tricked into thinking he's being taken to Germany for work but ends up in Istanbul instead, and his effort to track down the con man Maho, who has meanwhile married into a wealthy family and reinvented himself as a "banker." The film is an original screenplay drawing on the era's wave of labor migration to Germany and the 1980s banker scandals in Turkey; it was filmed in Istanbul's Levent district. Who it's for: anyone curious about an original Yeşilçam comedy drawing on 1980s Turkish banker scandals and the wave of labor migration to Germany. Who it's not for: viewers looking for an adaptation of a real book or event, since this is built on an original screenplay.
