Bebo's Girl

A Tuscan village just after the war. Mara is a pretty girl who likes being looked at. Bube is a communist back from the partisans who cannot settle into the ordinariness of peacetime. They meet, and Mara comes to feel bound to him. When Bube is implicated in a political killing and has to run, she does not let go of him; she follows even while the carabinieri are looking for him. Luigi Comencini adapted the film from Carlo Cassola's novel, which had won the Strega Prize. Claudia Cardinale plays Mara and took the Nastro d'Argento for it. Italy's reckoning with its own postwar years is told from inside a love story.
