What Beginning of an Unknown Era Is About
The film is made of two parts adapted from stories by two Russian writers whose work had been banned for decades, and for that reason it spent twenty years in the censor’s vault itself. One part comes from Yuri Olesha’s story Angel and speaks in tragic terms of the violence and destruction of the years after the revolution. The other comes from Andrei Platonov’s The Homeland of Electricity and gives the same period through an odd, unsettling grotesque. Two young directors, Andrei Smirnov and Larisa Shepitko, each shot one part. The seventy three minute Soviet production was completed in 1967 and only reached an audience at the end of the eighties.
