Bel Ami

Jun Geng's 2025 Chinese film is set in a frozen town in the north. A middle-aged man falls in love for the first time and decides to come out. In the same town a lesbian couple are looking for a man to marry so they can have a child. The film joins the two lines; the narrative slides toward the absurd and gives the tension between identity and social expectation through humour. The cast are unknown. The images are wintry and built on held shots. The tone is dry and mocking. Who it's for: viewers of Chinese independent cinema and queer narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an emotional love story; the film keeps its distance.
