What Better Days Ahead Is About
Maryalva makes her living dubbing American television series into Portuguese, and sees herself one day as a Hollywood star. Daydream and reality run into each other: she talks to the star of the series she dubs, argues with the ghost of the boyfriend who died young in a motorcycle accident, turns her own life into a stage. The film gives this not as a sad disappointment but as a way of holding out that is both funny and mournful. Marília Pêra and José Wilker appear in Carlos Diegues’s ninety two minute Brazilian film, with the singer Rita Lee as the star of the series. It was completed in 1989 and was Brazil’s entry for the foreign film Oscar that year.
